As a marketer, one of my passions is finding the best minds in the marketing industry today. Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the smartest marketers on the planet, Callum Roche who is disrupting the e-commerce community today. Want to know what’s even more impressive, he just turned 23 years old. Yes, you read that correctly, 23. Here are some lessons marketers and businesses can learn from our interview.
“Callum Roche”: Tell me about your background.
Callum: I am 23, and I currently own 2 businesses and recently just published a best-selling book. I run an e-commerce agency called Ecom And Chill that helps turn high profile influencers into CEO’s by leveraging their personal brands. When I’m not working on that, I’m helping young entrepreneurs create elite personal brands from scratch.
I dropped out of college in my second year and have self-educated myself ever since. I made my first dollar online when I was 12 selling background designs to famous youtubers. Since then, I’ve had 4 businesses, 2 of which failed which ultimately led me to the ones that are crushing it today.
“Callum Roche”: That sounds very different to what most 23-year olds are doing. What was it that made you choose the personal branding niche?
Callum: Great question and to be honest, I’ve worked in several other niches and they are not quite the same for me, I didn’t get much fulfillment. I mean there’s no better feeling than helping scale a personal brand because the return on investment is more than money for me and the client.
Together, whether it’s a course that’s being sold or whatever it may be, the feeling of customers telling you their lives have improved infinitely because of the investment they made is unmatched.
“Callum Roche”: Tell me about your other company Ecom And Chill.
Callum: I actually co-founded that business with my business partner Jordan. For so long I’ve always believed that if social media disappeared tomorrow that there would be so many influencers left without an income stream. The main reason for that is because they rely solely on endorsement deals and we wanted to solve that problem.
If you look at any of the influencers who are winning right now, they’re selling their own products and they don’t rely or have to compete for the next brand deal. Whereas, the rest of the influencer market are competing against each other for sponsorships which are ultimately driving influencer earnings down.
The industry is changing from endorsements to entrepreneurship and as Facebook and Instagram become more of an advertising platform, organic reach will continue to decline, this is expediting this shift. We solve this problem by building and managing profitable e-commerce stores for them that they can eventually sell for potentially seven figures or more.
“Callum Roche”: Wow, that’s the first of its kind. What tips would you give to an influencer or entrepreneur right now who wants to be successful with e-commerce?
Callum: I always say never give up. My background wasn’t one that seemed destined for success and even at that I’ve still got a long way to go. Look for what you are good at and leverage that to your advantage by selling a product or service. Try not to overthink, you’re not always going to get it right.
